The star all-rounder for Sri Lanka in white-ball cricket Wanindu Hasaranga announced his retirement from Test cricket on August 15. Hasaranga has represented Sri Lanka in just four Test matches where he has registered 196 runs and 4 wickets in his Test career.
Wanindu Hasaranga, the bright all-round star of Sri Lanka, has chosen to wave farewell to Test cricket. This choice arises from his goal to expand his international adventure in the world of white-ball cricket.
Despite his talent in spin-bowling and all-round skills, Hasaranga participated in merely four Test matches for Sri Lanka. Within this span, he collected 196 runs and captured four wickets. His excursion into the Test arena commenced in December 2020 against South Africa, and he finished this chapter in April 2021 with a match against Bangladesh on his home turf.
Reports indicate that Hasaranga announced his wish to retire from Test cricket through a letter to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), a proposition that has been approved. His goal currently revolves around making his imprint in the limited-overs formats, where he intends to represent his nation with utmost dedication and expertise.
“We will accept his decision and are confident that Hasaranga will be a vital part of our white-ball program going forward,” said SLC CEO Ashley De Silva in a statement.
In the presently ongoing Lanka Premier League campaign, Hasaranga’s efforts have been nothing short of outstanding. Notably, he now occupies the third spot for the maximum number of wickets taken, with an excellent score of 11 wickets. His bowling average is at 15.82 with an economy rate of just 5.87.
Adding to his prowess, Hasaranga has also established himself as the fourth-highest run-scorer in the competition, scoring a total of 212 runs. His batting average lies at an astounding 35.33, and he has exhibited a striking rate of 200.
His performance in Indian Premier League 2023 was terrible, Wanindu Hasaranga who plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore only managed to get just nine wickets from eight games. His bowling average during this period was 28.66, and he maintained an economy rate of 8.89. Furthermore, his effect with the bat was limited, having scored a total of 33 runs with an average of 16.50.
