The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are reportedly making a significant move by preparing to enter the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

In a significant move within the cricketing community, the sports division of India Cements and its staff are set to collaborate with Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd. (CSKCL), according to The Economic Times.

Rupa Gurunath, daughter of N. Srinivasan and a full-time director at India Cements, is expected to join the CSKCL board. With her deep involvement in the franchise’s operations, she is anticipated to lead upcoming expansion efforts.

There is growing anticipation around CSK potentially acquiring a Women’s Premier League (WPL) franchise, particularly with Rupa Gurunath’s expected appointment to the CSKCL board. Known for her ambitious vision and strategic insights, she is likely to play a crucial role in advancing women’s cricket.

As reported by The Economic Times, a CSK executive stated that the franchise is currently evaluating the financial viability of owning a WPL team. They are carefully considering the experiences of the existing five franchises in WPL 2024 before making a final decision.

“CSK is currently studying the financial viability and the experience of the other five IPL franchises that took part last year.” – A CSK official was quoted by the Economic Times

India Cements has a longstanding history of supporting cricket under the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, significantly contributing through its teams and coaching staff. According to a report by investment bank Houlihan Lokey Inc. in June, the franchise tied for the most successful in IPL history is also considered the most valuable, with a brand valuation of $231 million.

N Srinivasan, the former BCCI president and current Vice Chairman and Managing Director of India Cements, together with his family, are the main promoters of CSKCL. As stated in the company’s 2023 annual report, they hold a 28.14% stake and will remain the owners of the IPL team.
