Following Pakistan’s unexpected and remarkable loss to Afghanistan in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match, the legendary former Pakistani fast bowler Waqar Younis didn’t mince words in his critical evaluation of the national team. He openly criticized the Pakistani squad for the embarrassing defeat, holding them accountable for it.
Babar Azam, leading the Pakistani side, faced a resounding defeat on the field, leaving both fans and cricket experts frustrated by their lackluster fielding. Afghanistan’s remarkable victory over Pakistan was their first-ever ODI win against their rivals after eight attempts. This significant achievement came just a week following their stunning victory over defending champions England in Delhi. After the match, Waqar Younis didn’t hold back, criticizing Pakistan’s disappointing performance, emphasizing the multitude of fielding mistakes as “rubbish cricket.”
“Let’s not talk about Pakistan cricket. They played rubbish cricket. Afghanistan played some superb cricket,” Waqar said on Star Sports.
Pakistan’s Cricket World Cup adventure has hit a rough patch, with three defeats in just five matches. Their upcoming task is a daunting one, facing a strong South African team at the same venue this Friday. On the other hand, Afghanistan’s World Cup journey is looking up with two victories out of five games. They are about to face a Sri Lankan side that’s been having a tough time in Pune this coming Sunday.

Historic Win By Afghanistan Team Against Pakistan In The World Cup
In a stunning display of both batting and bowling skills, Afghanistan secured an impressive and comprehensive eight-wicket victory over Pakistan in the 2023 World Cup. Chasing a target of 283 runs, Afghanistan’s outstanding performance was driven by the exceptional contributions of Ibrahim Zadran (87), Rahmat Shah (unbeaten at 77), and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65), carrying them to a final total of 286-2 in 49 overs.
On the other hand, Pakistan managed to put up a score of 282-7 in their allocated 50 overs, thanks to the efforts of captain Babar Azam, who contributed 74 runs, and opener Abdullah Shafique, who scored 58 runs. However, this score fell short against a precise Afghanistan team. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi, showcasing his skills with an unbeaten 48 off 45 deliveries, sealed the victory with a boundary, surpassing their previous highest ODI chase of 274 against the UAE in Dubai back in 2014.
