South Africa put on a spectacular show against Sri Lanka’s bowling lineup at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in Delhi. The South African team was on fire, breaking the world record for the highest-ever World Cup total in a stunning display of batting prowess.
South Africa’s cricket team has outperformed Australia’s 417-run record against Afghanistan in the 2015 World Cup at Perth. The Proteas, led by superb centuries from Quinton De Kock (100), Rassie Van Der Dussen (108), and Aiden Markram (106), accumulated a stunning total of 428 runs within their allowed 50 overs.
Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium witnessed an overwhelming bombardment as the Proteas’ batters maintained their unrelenting assault against Sri Lanka’s bowlers. Captain Temba Bavuma was the only one to register a single-digit score, with the other batters inflicting heavy damage on the Sri Lankan side. Quinton De Kock and Rassie van der Dussen’s combination delivered a record 204 runs in just 29 overs, with both batsmen achieving hundreds. After the second wicket went, Aiden Markram (106 in 54 balls) and Heinrich Klassen (32 in 20 balls) took the lead of the onslaught.
Aiden Markram put his name into the World Cup record books by shattering the fastest century to date. Markram achieved his century in only 49 balls, smashing the previous mark established by Kevin O’Brien with a 50-ball century against England in the 2011 World Cup. Markram’s innings of 106 runs off 54 balls, comprising 14 fours and 3 soaring sixes, was a spectacle for the people in attendance at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. In total, South Africa fired 14 sixes during their innings.
With a total of 428 runs, South Africa has now surpassed Australia’s 417-run record from the 2015 World Cup against Afghanistan, creating a new bar for the highest World Cup total in an innings. This feat tops India’s record in 2015 when they scored 413 runs against Bermuda in the Port of Spain in the 2007 World Cup.
