During the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, Bangladesh’s captain, Shakib Al Hasan, made a surprising decision to head back home. This came in the wake of Bangladesh’s significant loss to South Africa at Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium.

According to reports, Shakib chose to return to Dhaka to seek guidance from his personal mentor and coach, Nazmul Abedeen Faheem. Shakib has faced challenges with his batting in the current World Cup, managing just 56 runs in four innings. On the bowling front, he’s taken six wickets. Unfortunately, these struggles have coincided with Bangladesh’s poor performance, having lost four out of five games and finding themselves at the bottom of the points table.

Bangladesh’s upcoming matches are crucial, with encounters against Netherlands on October 29 and Pakistan on October 31, both to be held at Eden Gardens. While the rest of the team traveled to Kolkata, Captain Shakib Al Hasan made the choice to return to Dhaka briefly for additional training sessions with his mentor in preparation for these vital matches.

Shakib’s decision to return to Dhaka has raised concerns, given his recent form woes, which have coincided with Bangladesh’s underwhelming performance in the tournament. At the moment, they’re sitting at the very bottom of the points table.

Faheem disclosed that Shakib has made his way to Dhaka, where they plan to spend three days training together before he heads back to Kolkata. Their training session has predominantly revolved around batting, emphasizing extensive practice in the nets.
“He arrived today. We will be training for three days. Today, tomorrow, and the day after, he will return to Kolkata. We worked on his batting today. Shakib probably feels comfortable working this way. I am not sure what we are going to do next; I will take each session as he wants,” Faheem told ESPNCricinfo.
