Tilak Varma is off to an outstanding start in his international cricket journey. He’s playing strongly in the ongoing T20I series against the West Indies, leading the way in terms of runs scored. This 20-year-old superstar has managed to score 139 runs in three matches, with an average of 69.50 and a strike rate of 139.

Varma’s efforts have not only captured the eye of cricket lovers but also won accolades from seasoned players. Ravichandran Ashwin, a strong off-spinner, has gone so far as to say that Varma could be considered for the ODI World Cup 2023.

Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian cricket team, too gave his thoughts on Varma’s performances. Sharma, who led Varma in the Mumbai Indians during IPL 2022, was very impressed by the young player’s ability. It’s worth emphasizing that Varma first exhibited his talent during the IPL 2022, where he played for the Mumbai Indians under Sharma’s supervision. He concluded the season as the second-highest run-scorer for his side, accumulating 397 runs in total.

“He looks very promising. I have seen him for two years now, he has got the hunger, and that is the most important thing. In him I can see, for the age that he is of, he is quite matured. He knows his batting so well. When I speak with him I understand that the boy knows his batting – where he has to hit, what he has to do in that period,” was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

The Indian captain Rohit Sharma continued by expressing his uncertainty about Tilak Varma’s chances at the ODI World Cup 2023 but praised him for his talent.

“That is all that I will say about him, I do not know about the World Cup and all, but definitely the guy is talented and he showed it in these few games that he has played for India,” he added.

Notably, Varma was the best scorer for India in the first two T20Is with innings of 39 (22) and 51 (41) respectively. Furthermore, he produced a fantastic knock of 49* (37) in the third T20I and helped India stay alive in the series. Meanwhile, the ‘Men in Blue’ have another must-win game at hand as they lock horns with the West Indies in the fifth T20I on Sunday, August 13.
