Experienced Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is of the belief that emerging triumphant against Pakistan in the existing Asia Cup and the upcoming ODI World Cup, scheduled to be played on October 5 in Ahmedabad, won’t be a stroll in the park. According to Ashwin, the challenge of defeating Pakistan in these competitions is a formidable one that shouldn’t be ignored.
Recently, the team led by Babar Azam achieved a remarkable feat by sweeping Afghanistan 3-0 in the ODI series. This victory propelled them to the top spot in the world rankings—a clear testament to the incredible prowess of the Men in Green.
It’s truly impressive to see how they dominate in white-ball cricket. Ashwin himself praised their performance, emphasizing that if Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan can maintain their consistent form over the next three months, the team could become a force to be reckoned with. He highlighted the squad’s immense depth, which bodes well for their future endeavors. The team’s potential seems boundless, and their recent achievements reflect their dedication and skill on the field.
“If Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan consistently dish out performances with the bat, Pakistan will be one hell of a team heading into this Asia Cup and the World Cup. It will take some beating since Pakistan is an extraordinary team. It is all down to their (Pakistan’s) squad depth. Pakistan has invariably developed exceptional cricketers,” Ashwin mentioned on his YouTube channel.
Ashwin also pointed out that Pakistan has a history of nurturing excellent fast bowlers due to the popularity of tape-ball cricket in the region. Players like Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf are currently displaying remarkable performances. Additionally, Ashwin acknowledged that Pakistan’s batting has shown a noteworthy improvement in recent times.
“Thanks to its tape-ball cricket, they have always produced an incredible series of pacers. Also, their batting has been superior during the late 90s and 2000s. But, the exposure they have got to various (T20) leagues has been the primary reason for their re-emergence in the previous five or six years. They also have the PSL. Additionally, in the recent BBL drafts, there were at least 60-70 Pakistan players,” Ashwin concluded.
