The T20 World Cup 2024 is just a little over two months away, and cricket enthusiasts are buzzing with anticipation as the mega event gears up to unfold in the West Indies and USA from June 01. Leading up to the tournament, there has been much chatter about India’s squad and who will lead the team, with the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) contemplating the selection of a youthful lineup.

Putting an end to the speculations, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah recently clarified the captaincy scenario for India in the T20 extravaganza. Expressing his confidence, he affirmed that India is set to conquer the tournament under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. Speaking at the unveiling ceremony of the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot, formerly known as the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Shah commended India for their impressive ODI World Cup 2023 performance and expressed belief in their capability to clinch victory in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.

“In 2023 (final) at Ahmedabad, even though we did not win the World Cup after 10 straight wins, we won hearts. I want to promise you that in 2024 (T20 World Cup) in Barbados (venue for the final), under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, ham Bharat ka jhanda gaadenge (we will hoist the Indian flag),” Shah said during his speech while renaming the SCA Stadium as the Niranjan Shah Stadium on Wednesday.

Shah further said that Rahul Dravid, who got the extension after the World Cup 2023, will remain the head coach of the side while star all-rounder Hardik Pandya will serve as Rohit’s deputy in T20 World Cup 2024.

“Rahul Dravid to be India coach during T20 World Cup, Hardik Pandya will be Rohit Sharma’s deputy,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said.

Many people were wondering who would lead the Indian cricket team at the T20 World Cup in 2024. While Rohit Sharma was out with an injury, Hardik Pandya led a youthful squad. According to multiple reports, the dynamic player was being considered for the role of the team’s captain.

Since the T20 World Cup 2022, when India lost to England in the semi-finals, Rohit Sharma had not played in a Twenty20 international. Although he sat out all of 2023’s Twenty20 Internationals, he returned as captain for the concluding three-match series against Afghanistan.

Both of Rohit Sharma’s games back from injury ended in ducks, and he took a lot of heat for failing to make an impact at the plate. But in the third Bengaluru game, he gave a resounding response.

As India fell behind at 22/4 in that encounter, Rohit Sharma came into his own. Under his captaincy, his side won the series 3-0 thanks to his outstanding performance, during which he scored 122 runs without facing any batters.

Currently leading the Indian team in the Test series against England, Rohit Sharma has performed reasonably well. The series is currently level at 1-1, with England winning the first game in Hyderabad and India making a strong comeback to win in Vizag.
