The International Cricket Council (ICC) has handed a two-game suspension to Sri Lanka T20I captain Wanindu Hasaranga.
The leg-spinner faced consequences for violating Article 2.13 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the recently concluded third T20I against Afghanistan.
Following this breach in the third T20I against Afghanistan, Wanindu Hasaranga accumulated a total of five demerit points within 24 months. The Sri Lanka T20 skipper was handed a 50 percent fine and three demerit points as a result of his transgression.
Wanindu Hasaranga was held accountable for breaking Article 2.13 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. This law is associated with “Personal abuse of a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire or Match Referee during an International Match.”
Wanindu Hasaranga found himself in hot water after expressing his frustration towards umpire Lyndon Hanibal. The leg-spinner was left bewildered by the decision not to call a high full toss a no-ball during the third T20I against Afghanistan.
With five demerit points added to his record, Hasaranga now has two suspension points. Consequently, the leg-spinner is set to face a ban for either one Test match or two ODIs or T20Is, whichever comes first for the player or player support personnel. As a result of this, the Sri Lankan star will be ineligible to participate in two upcoming T20Is against Bangladesh next month.
As the match reached a crucial moment, Sri Lanka found themselves needing 11 runs from the last three balls. The turning point came when Momand’s delivery was deemed legitimate, and despite Mendis failing to connect with the full toss, the equation shifted to 11 runs required from just two balls. In the end, Sri Lanka faced a heartbreaking defeat, falling short by three runs.
“That kind of thing shouldn’t happen in an international match,” Hasaranga said of the incident.
Wanindu Hasaranga, currently holding the second spot in the ICC Men’s T20I bowler rankings, clinched the Player of the Series title for his outstanding performance in the three-match series against Afghanistan. With four wickets to his credit, Hasaranga showcased his prowess not only with the ball but also made valuable contributions with the bat.
On the flip side, Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz faced a penalty from the ICC. He was fined 15 percent of his match fee for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the third T20I against Sri Lanka.
