Sri Lanka is suffering continuous challenges with injuries as Dilshan Madushanka has been sidelined for the upcoming Asia Cup. Adding to their troubles, there’s concern regarding the availability of another fast bowler, Lahiru Kumara. This puts the reigning champs in a difficult predicament, struggling with these setbacks. Dushmanta Chameera, too is ruled out of the competition, while leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga.
Dilshan Madushanka suffered an oblique muscle tear during a practice match, which has sadly put him out of the competition. Right now, he’s undergoing rehabilitation with Sri Lanka Cricket working hard to get him ready for the 2023 ODI World Cup, due to take off on October 5.
Meanwhile, reports from ESPNcricinfo claim that Kumara is battling with a side issue. Although his rehabilitation time is predicted to be shorter than Dushmanta Chameera and Dilshan Madushanka, he’s unlikely to be available for the Asia Cup.
These three fast bowlers, who played a significant role in the national team’s triumph in the ODI World Cup qualifiers, will be sadly missed. Their absence could pose issues for Sri Lanka in the competition. To fill their shoes, the team is likely to count on Kasun Rajitha, Pramod Madushan, and Matheesha Pathirana. All three have had impressive performances in recent international contests.
Pathirana acquired significant expertise during his time with the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, and he’s been applying those lessons to his International cricket career. On the other hand, Kasun Rajitha has featured in 24 matches, securing 31 wickets with an economy rate of 5.91.
The Absence of Wanindu Hasaranga could lead to the emergence of left-arm spinning all-rounders Dunith Wellalage or Dushan Hemantha. The selectors are facing a difficult problem as Sri Lanka’s first match against Bangladesh is slated for August 31 in Pakistan. The team’s goal is to start well and secure their place in the Super Four stage of the competition.
It is worth mentioning that Sri Lanka haven’t announced their squad for the Asia Cup tournament till date which is scheduled to kick off on August 30. Sri Lanka will face Bangladesh in their opening encounter at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on August 31.
