Faf Du Plessis, the former South African captain, has disclosed his contemplation of making a return to international cricket, specifically in the T20I format. Not presently part of any South African squad across formats, Faf has been absent from the national side for the past two years.

While actively participating in various global leagues, Faf Du Plessis has indicated his interest in potentially featuring in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. Earlier this year, he had dropped hints about a possible return for the significant T20 international event. Currently engaged in Abu Dhabi, he is showcasing his skills in the Abu Dhabi T10 League for Samp Army. Faf maintains his fitness and continues to amass significant runs for franchises worldwide in various leagues.

Faf Du Plessis revealed that he’s been having talks with South African head coach Rob Walter. Faf said, “I believe that I can return to international cricket. We have been speaking about this for the last couple of years. It’s just figuring out the balance of the T20 World Cup next year. It’s certainly something we have spoken about with the new coach.” Faf played his last T20I games for South Africa in December 2020.

“I do a lot of hard work to ensure I look after my body to be able to play this brilliant game we love so much. When you do get a little bit older, you have to make sure you put in the work. Otherwise, the hamstring and other body parts do not work that well,” he further added.

South Africa’s quest for an ICC title has remained unfulfilled since their triumph in the 1998 ICC Champions Trophy, marking their sole major victory. Notably, they haven’t reached the finals in any subsequent editions of the tournament. The current age of Faf du Plessis stands at 39, and his T20I journey with South Africa spans from 2012 to 2020. Across 50 matches, he accumulated 1528 runs with an impressive average of 35.53 and a striking strike rate of 134.38. Du Plessis showcased his batting prowess in the shortest format, recording a T20I century along with 10 half-centuries in service to the South African team.
