Spearheaded by Brian Masaba, the team paved the way for qualification by securing a notable five-wicket win against Zimbabwe in their third fixture.
The Super 8 stage is set to unfold with two groups of four teams each, and the top two from each group will progress to the semi-finals. Before November 30, 19 teams had already qualified, intensifying the competition for the coveted 20th spot between Uganda and Zimbabwe. As both teams played their respective matches in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Region Qualifier 2023, it is now confirmed that Uganda secured the final berth.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Region Qualifier 2023 featured seven teams, with the top two slated to advance from the African region. Namibia, with an impeccable record of five consecutive wins, had already secured their spot, leaving just one vacancy. Uganda’s decisive victory over Rwanda solidified their position as the 20th team to qualify for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Zimbabwe’s ongoing match against Kenya holds no bearing on qualification since, even if they emerge victorious, Uganda maintains a two-point lead. Hence, this marks a historic milestone as Uganda secures qualification for an ICC event for the first time in history.
Following Uganda’s remarkable victory, the lineup for the T20 World Cup 2024 has been solidified with all 20 participating nations now confirmed. The West Indies and USA secured automatic berths as hosts of the T20 spectacle, joined by the top eight teams from the 2022 edition in Australia: Australia, India, Pakistan, England, South Africa, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand. Additionally, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, boasting the next-best rankings, also earned direct qualifications.
Eight teams earned their spots in the T20 World Cup through regional qualification events held in Asia, Africa, the Americas, East Asia Pacific, and Europe. Ireland, Scotland, Namibia, Uganda, Nepal, Oman, PNG, and Canada emerged victorious in these events.
The T20 World Cup is scheduled to kick off on June 3, with the 20 participating teams initially divided into five groups of four. The top two teams from each group will progress to the Super 8 stage, where they will be divided into two groups of four teams each. From these Super 8 groups, the top two teams will qualify for the semi-finals, leading to a final showdown between the winners of the semis.
