In the thrilling showdown between India and Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai during Match 33 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, star Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer smashed the longest six of the tournament on Thursday, November 2.

The 28-year-old Shreyas Iyer went up to the crease, taking his position at the batting number right following Shubman Gill’s dismissal in the 30th over. Iyer didn’t waste any time settling in; instead, he attacked the bowlers right from the get-go.

Without delay, he delivered the longest six of the tournament on the fourth delivery of the 36th over, despatched down by Kasun Rajitha. This right-handed batsman calmly met a wide delivery and crushed it straight down the ground, sending the ball an astonishing 106 meters. He outdid Glenn Maxwell from Australia, who had earlier hit a 104-meter six against New Zealand in Dharamsala.

Iyer had previously showcased his power by launching a colossal 101-meter six against Afghanistan in Delhi, securing the title of the longest six in the tournament at that time. Stepping onto the field with the weight of previous low scores, the 28-year-old delivered his second half-century in the tournament, a splendid 82 runs off just 36 balls. His innings featured three boundaries and six powerful sixes, an exemplary performance under pressure.

Before Iyer’s remarkable performance, Gill and Kohli set a solid base with an impressive partnership. Together, they added 189 runs from 178 balls for the second wicket. It was a near miss for both Gill and Kohli in their pursuit of centuries, with Gill falling just short at 92 and Kohli at 88. In the end, India concluded their innings with a formidable score of 357/8 in their allotted 50 overs.

When Sri Lanka set out to chase India’s imposing total of 358, they found themselves struggling and were eventually bowled out for a mere 55 runs. This stunning outcome was largely thanks to the exceptional performances by our pace bowlers. Mohammed Shami led the charge with a fantastic five-wicket haul, while Mohammed Siraj contributed with three crucial wickets, and Jasprit Bumrah added another wicket to seal India’s dominating victory at the Wankhede Stadium.
