Shreyas Iyer notched up 2,000 ODI runs in his career after scoring an impressive 82 runs. Before his innings against Sri Lanka at Wankhede, he required 65 runs to reach this significant milestone. It took Shreyas 49 innings to achieve this feat, making him the third-fastest Indian batsman to accomplish this remarkable feat.

Shreyas Iyer, a star batsman, solidified his status as the third fastest Indian cricketer to reach 2000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs). During the World Cup 2023 match against Sri Lanka at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, Iyer achieved this milestone in his 49th innings, joining an elite group led by Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan.

Shreyas Iyer reached the 2000-run mark in his ODI career with an impressive 82-run performance. Before stepping onto the field against Sri Lanka at Wankhede, he needed 65 runs to achieve this milestone. It took him 49 innings to reach this career-defining moment, making him the third-fastest Indian batsman to do so. In the process, he surpassed renowned names like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Sourav Ganguly. To put this in perspective, Virat Kohli, who is widely celebrated, took 53 ODI innings to achieve the same feat.

Remarkably, only three Indian batters have managed to cross the 2000-run mark in fewer than 50 ODI innings. Shubman Gill accomplished this in 38 innings, Shikhar Dhawan in 48 innings, and Shreyas Iyer in 49 innings. Sourav Ganguly and Navjot Singh Sidhu share the fourth position, both taking 52 innings to reach 2000 ODI runs. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul jointly occupy the fifth spot, needing 53 innings to achieve this milestone. Shreyas Iyer’s 16th ODI half-century was a significant highlight of his performance.

Earlier in the same tournament, Shubman Gill claimed the title of the world’s fastest batter to reach 2000 runs, achieving this feat during a match against New Zealand at HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. Shikhar Dhawan was closely followed as the second-fastest Indian, accomplishing the feat in his 48th innings back in 2014.

Iyer’s achievement also places him as the joint 12th fastest batter to achieve 2000 ODI runs, sharing this distinction with cricket stalwarts such as Gordon Greenidge from the West Indies, Jonny Bairstow from England, Kyle Coetzer from Scotland, and Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman.

During the match against Sri Lanka, Iyer took the crease after Shubman Gill’s dismissal, who had scored 92 runs. Partnering with KL Rahul, Iyer built a strong 60-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Iyer’s determination shone as he reached his half-century in just 36 balls, ultimately contributing 82 runs from 56 balls, including three fours and six sixes.

Since the 2019 World Cup, Shreyas Iyer has played a crucial role in the Indian batting lineup, particularly as a strong contender for the No. 4 position. After making a comeback in the Asia Cup following a recovery from a back injury, Iyer has consistently delivered with the bat.
