Matheesha Pathirana, from Sri Lanka, sadly won’t be able to participate in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 due to a shoulder injury he sustained during warm-up matches. He put up a brave fight to recover, but unfortunately, it was not meant to be. In his place, the experienced Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews will step in to continue the World Cup journey.
Pathirana participated in two matches at the tournament, facing South Africa and Pakistan. Unfortunately, his injuries proved to be too severe, ultimately forcing him to withdraw from the competition.
To cover the gap in the Sri Lanka team, the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 Event Technical Committee has given the green light for the inclusion of former Sri Lankan captain and all-rounder Angelo Mathews. Mathews, a seasoned player with 221 ODIs under his belt, comes in after Pathirana’s poor recovery from a shoulder injury incurred during a warm-up match. This tragic incident led to Pathirana’s removal from the tournament.
In conformance with the rules, every substitution in the World Cup roster must seek approval from the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 Event Technical Committee. This method is in place to ensure fairness and protect the competition’s integrity. While countries have the ability to make changes to their roster throughout the World Cup, all revisions must follow the criteria specified by the cricket governing body.

The acquisition of Angelo Mathews bolsters Sri Lanka’s team tremendously. With his abundance of expertise and prior exposure to Indian conditions, he may serve as a strong all-rounder, perhaps becoming a crucial asset to the squad. It’s vital to note that every substitution of a player requires formal permission from the Event Technical Committee before the new player can be officially included in the squad.
The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 consists of Wasim Khan (ICC General Manager – Cricket and ETC Chair), Chris Tetley (ICC Head of Events), Hemang Amin (Acting CEO – BCCI), Gaurav Saxena (General Manager – Operations, BCCI), Russel Arnold and Simon Doull (Independent Representatives).
