In a significant milestone, Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian cricket team, reached a remarkable achievement by amassing a total of 18,000 runs in international cricket. This remarkable feat was accomplished during the India vs. England clash in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, held on October 29, 2023.

India started this game with a perfect record, having won all five of their previous matches. In contrast, England’s route to this match was defined by problems, with four losses in their last five games, including defeats to Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.

Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to put India in to bat first in Lucknow. He also indicated that England would stay with their unchanged team. On the Indian side, Captain Rohit Sharma indicated that his choice would have been to bat first had he won the toss, and the team remained unaltered as well.

The starting duo for India were Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. David Willey opened with a maiden over to India’s skipper, who followed a conservative approach in the early exchanges.

Nevertheless, Shubman Gill’s spell at the crease was short-lived, as Chris Woakes knocked him out for just 9 runs. Gill attempted a long cover drive, but the ball nipped back and crashed into his stumps. Virat Kohli, known for his patience, couldn’t get going and was removed for a duck after trying to clear mid-off off David Willey’s bowling.

Expectations were high for Shreyas Iyer, but he also succumbed to his well-documented susceptibility against short-pitched deliveries. His collapse came when he attempted to pull a larger delivery from Woakes, managing only four runs.

Rohit Sharma initially took an aggressive approach against the bowlers but adjusted his game plan after India lost three wickets. He, along with KL Rahul, then focused on stabilizing the innings.

During his innings, Rohit Sharma achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 18,000 international runs on a Sunday. In his 477th innings, the Indian captain became just the fifth Indian player to achieve this feat, following in the footsteps of legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, and Virat Kohli. Rohit accomplished this milestone with a boundary off Adil Rashid.

Breaking down his 18,000 runs, Rohit accumulated 3,677 runs in Test matches, 3,853 in T20Is, and a substantial 10,470 in ODIs. His international cricket record includes an impressive 45 centuries and 99 fifties.
