Pakistan achieved a remarkable feat against Sri Lanka, setting several new records at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad by successfully chasing down a target of 345 runs. This victory propelled Pakistan to second place in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 standings, right behind New Zealand, as they kick-started their campaign with consecutive wins.

In a magnificent exhibition of cricket brilliance, Pakistan scored a miraculous victory over Sri Lanka by 6 wickets, with Mohammad Rizwan blasting an unbeaten 131 runs and Abdullah Shafique adding a steady 113. Their centuries not only sealed the triumph but also engraved Pakistan’s name in the annals of World Cup history by setting a new record. This incredible performance represented the first time in World Cup history that a team successfully chased down a target over 330 runs in 50 overs. Pakistan’s achievement eclipsed Ireland’s long-standing record when they pursued 329 runs against England in 2011. Pakistan’s landmark moment occurred as they scored a daunting 345 runs against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad.

This momentous occasion also showed the progression of World Cup records, as South African batsman Aiden Markram recently beat Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien’s record for the fastest World Cup century, doing it in just 49 balls. The heroics of opener Abdullah Shafique and the unflinching resilience of Mohammad Rizwan paved the way for Pakistan’s record-breaking chase, as they collaborated for a remarkable combination of 176 runs for the third wicket. Pakistan, despite losing two wickets during the initial power play, demonstrated their grit and drive.

On the other side, Sri Lanka put up a spirited fight, reaching a total of 344 runs on the scoreboard, with important contributions from Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarwickrama with the bat. Sri Lanka were poised for a huge total, but the Pakistani bowlers made a dramatic return in the last overs. Hasan Ali was the star, completing his spell with four critical wickets in ten overs, while Haris Rauf also made a vital contribution by capturing two wickets in the dying moments of the match.
