While Pakistan bounced back to victory with a convincing 7-wicket triumph over Bangladesh in Kolkata, their captain, Babar Azam, continued to face difficulties with his batting performance throughout the tournament. He again failed to put a decent score to his name.
Babar Azam’s position in the 2023 World Cup is in peril, despite entering the competition as the top-ranked ICC ODI batsman. In a recent encounter, openers Abdullah Shafique and Fakhar Zaman made a 204-run chase appear effortless with their outstanding 128-run partnership over 20 overs. Babar Azam had the perfect opportunity to build on this good foundation and raise Pakistan’s Net Run Rate (NRR) while keeping their hopes alive for a position in the semi-finals.
However, things took a dismal turn for Babar Azam. After executing a magnificent cover drive, he managed to score only 9 runs from 16 balls and was eventually removed by Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Babar Azam had attempted to take on the off-spinner by striding down the pitch and going for a six down the ground. Unfortunately, he was comfortably caught at long-on by Mahmudullah, well within the boundary line.
This signaled the end of Babar’s innings and generated a rush of memes on Twitter as he continued to struggle in the competition. In his seven innings, Babar Azam has accumulated just 216 runs, averaging 30 with a strike rate of 77.
