Mumbai Indians (MI) women’s captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, shared a humorous revelation following her outstanding innings against Gujarat Giants in the Women Premier League (WPL) 2024. She amusingly mentioned that match referees are keeping a close eye on her bat.
Harmanpreet Kaur delivered a stellar performance, leading her team to a crucial victory against all odds. With an incredible display of batting prowess, she secured a playoff spot for MI, making them the first team to achieve this milestone in the season.
The MI skipper unleashed her “beast mode” when her team required approximately 90 runs in the final overs. Harmanpreet took on the opposition bowlers, smashing boundaries and towering sixes to entertain the crowd.
A defining moment came in the 18th over, where she plundered 24 runs off Sneh Rana. Harmanpreet’s masterful timing and precision left the crowd in awe as she guided her team to a remarkable win.
Her unbeaten knock of 95 runs from just 48 deliveries showcased a strike rate of around 200. The innings featured 10 fours and five colossal sixes. Particularly impressive was her acceleration in the latter part, scoring the last 75 runs off a mere 27 balls.
Till the 14th over, MI found themselves at 98/3, facing a challenging situation. However, Harmanpreet Kaur’s onslaught turned the game around, with 10 fours and 5 sixes propelling her team to victory with just one ball to spare. Partnering with Amelia Kerr, who contributed 12* off 10 balls, Kaur and Kerr’s unbeaten partnership of 93* runs in 38 balls solidified MI’s position at the top of the points table.
Following the match, Harmanpreet Kaur shared with the broadcasters that she opted for her practice bat and expressed satisfaction that it turned out to be a wise choice.
She said: “When we were practicing, I was using this bat (the one she played with), my match bat was different. But my grip was a bit loose with the latter. Then, I thought I should use my practice bat only.”
“Arey vo referee mere peeche pade hain, bat check kar rahe hain, jaise pata nahi kya daala hai bat me! (The match referee is checking my bat, as if I’ve put something in it)” Harmanpreet added.
Harmanpreet Kaur currently holds the third position in the tournament’s run-scoring chart, having amassed 235 runs at an impressive average of 78 and a striking rate of 147.
Similar to the previous season, the Mumbai Indians became the first team to secure their spot in the WPL 2024 playoffs, marking them as the first team to do so. Their objective in the remaining game is to clinch the top spot on the points table, ensuring a direct entry into the final.
