The second T20I in Dunedin between Pakistan Women and New Zealand Women during the 2023 tour was an absolute nail-biter, culminating in a historic series win for the visitors by a margin of 10 runs.
Living up to the pre-game excitement, both teams delivered commendable performances. New Zealand Women won the toss and chose to bowl first. Pakistan Women set a target of 138, finishing their innings at 137/6 in 20 overs.
Muneeba Ali led the charge for Pakistan, scoring 35 off 28 balls, while Aliya Riaz played a pivotal role with 32 runs off 22 balls. New Zealand’s Fran Jonas and Molly Penfold stood out, each claiming two wickets.
In response, New Zealand Women gave their best shot but fell short, ending at 127/7 in 20 overs. Hannah Rowe was the top scorer for the hosts, contributing 33 runs off 24 balls. Pakistan’s Fatima Sana stole the spotlight with the ball, taking three wickets for 22 runs in her four overs. Sadia Iqbal and Nida Dar also played crucial roles, securing two and one wickets respectively. The match concluded with Pakistan Women securing a hard-fought 10-run victory, showcasing their resilience in successfully defending the target.

In a surprising turn of events, Pakistan set up a win in the first game, and their triumph in the second T20I sealed the series for them. The Pakistan Women’s team etched their name in history by being the first Asian side to conquer New Zealand on their home turf. Looking at the wider picture, they now stand alongside England as the only other team to achieve this feat. England had previously attained this milestone in 2012, 2015, and 2021.
The tour progresses to its ODI leg after the third and final T20I, set to take place in Queenstown this Saturday.
