Meg Lanning, the captain of the Australian women’s team, revealed her decision to retire from International cricket. She has led the Australian women’s team in various formats for a remarkable 13 years.
Meg Lanning, the 31-year-old captain, bid farewell to international cricket on Thursday, marking the end of a remarkable 13-year leadership across formats for the Australian women’s team. Her contribution to the team’s success is unparalleled, leading them to victory in numerous ICC tournaments. Last year, she achieved a historic milestone by guiding the team to a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, making them the first-ever cricket team to clinch gold in the CWG. Lanning’s consistency as a top-order batswoman further solidified her legacy in both men’s and women’s cricket, making the Australian team a force to be reckoned with.
Meg Lanning broke into the world of cricket at just 17, recording her debut in a T20I match against New Zealand back in 2010. At the young age of 21, she assumed the reins as the team’s captain, bringing Australia to an astonishing 80 percent win ratio under her leadership. Lanning’s captaincy achieved new heights with success in the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2022. Additionally, Australia claimed victory in four T20 World Cups under her supervision in 2014, 2018, 2020, and 2023.
With 132 T20Is and 103 ODIs, she’s also been part of Australia’s six Test matches. Taking charge in 2014, Lanning stands as one of the most successful leaders in women’s cricket. Her captaincy boasts an impressive 69 victories out of 78 ODIs, triumphing in 76 out of 100 T20Is, and clinching a Test win in the four Tests she captained Australia. Leading her team to four T20 World Cup titles, an ODI World Cup, and last year’s Commonwealth Games gold, she’s truly left her mark.

In her final match at the helm, she led the team against South Africa earlier this year. On Thursday, she bid farewell to international cricket, expressing gratitude to the cricket board, family, friends, teammates, and management for contributing to her rewarding career. Meg Lanning wrote, “I’ve been incredibly fortunate to enjoy a 13-year international career, but I know now is the right time for me to move on to something new.”
“I’d like to thank my family, my teammates, Cricket Victoria, Cricket Australia, and the Australian Cricketers’ Association for their support to allow me to play the game I love at the highest level.” Meg further added.
Earlier this year, Lanning led the Delhi Capitals in the inaugural Women’s Premier League and ended up as the runners-up. The franchise acquired her for INR 1.1 Crore, and she was held onto before the auctions for the second edition. It seems she’s set to stay involved in franchise and domestic cricket.
