In the ongoing fourth Test against England at the Jharkhand Cricket Association complex in Ranchi, India’s emerging pacer Akash Deep shared his thoughts on his remarkable debut. Reflecting on the challenges he faced, he dedicated this special moment to his father.

Akash Deep emerged as a standout performer for the Indian team on Day 1 of the fourth Test against England, marking his debut with an impressive display. His journey to the national team was paved by notable performances in domestic cricket.

Having earned a call-up for the final three Tests against England, Akash Deep had to wait for his chance until the fourth match when Jasprit Bumrah was rested, opening the door for his debut in Test cricket.

In his maiden appearance, Akash Deep showcased exceptional skills with the ball, delivering a fiery performance in the opening spell. His precise lines and lengths left England’s top order struggling, and his bowling displayed a level of class that made him appear almost unplayable.

Akash Deep’s impact on the game was evident as he dismantled the England top order, dismissing Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope for a two-ball duck. Adding to his stellar performance, he then took the wicket of the dangerous Zak Crawley, leaving the opposition in a precarious position at 57/3.

Amid his success, Akash Deep took a moment to reflect on the tough times he had overcome and dedicated his debut to his father, making this achievement even more special.

During his performance, Akash Deep expressed that when his father was alive, he felt he wasn’t achieving much in life. He emphasized that his dad had harbored the dream of witnessing his son, the fast bowler, excel in life.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Akash Deep said: “I dedicate my debut to my father. I wasn’t able to do anything in life when he was alive and it was his dream that I do something good in life… so I dedicate this performance and debut to him.”

Last year, Akash Deep went through some tough personal setbacks, but he didn’t let that hinder his progress. Instead, he pushed through the emotional hardships and showcased outstanding performances in domestic cricket. His resilience and skill didn’t go unnoticed by the selectors, who rewarded him with a place in the Test team. Looking back on his challenging journey, Akash highlighted the crucial role played by his family’s support and emphasized his unwavering determination to thrive despite facing adversity.

“It was very emotional for me… I lost my brother and father in a year… my journey has been tough and my family played a big role. Mere paas khone ko kuch nahi tha, paane ko bahut kuch tha,” he added.

Akash Deep shone as the standout performer with the ball on the opening day, snagging three wickets for 70 runs. Looking ahead to Day 2, he is determined to capitalize on this success and is eager to add more wickets to his tally.
