Sanju Samson, the skipper of the Rajasthan Royals, shared a touching message on his social media following his selection in the T20 World Cup squad. His joy was evident as he expressed gratitude for the opportunity, especially considering his previous exclusions from major tournaments. His stellar performances in the ongoing IPL 2024 season played a significant role in securing his spot.

Competing against strong contenders like KL Rahul, Dinesh Karthik, and Jitesh Sharma wasn’t easy for Samson. Despite facing a setback with a golden duck in his last T20I appearance against Afghanistan, his consistent brilliance in IPL 2024 couldn’t be ignored.

At 29, Samson’s recent form has been nothing short of exceptional. With 385 runs in nine innings at an impressive average of 77.00 and a striking rate of 161, he’s been a standout performer. His tally includes four half-centuries, with an unbeaten 82 as his highest score of the season.

Samson couldn’t contain his happiness when he found out he was chosen. He hopped on Instagram and poured his heart out in Malayalam: “Viyarpu Thuniyitta Kuppayam,” translating to “A shirt stitched with sweat and hard work.” That post really showed just how much effort and dedication the 29-year-old had put into reaching this moment.

Sanju Samson has been quite a standout in IPL 2024, racking up 385 runs from 9 matches, which includes four half-centuries. This performance has put him in contention for a spot in the squad, competing alongside Pant and KL Rahul.

Despite his sporadic appearances since his T20I debut against Zimbabwe in 2015, Samson’s track record in the shortest format isn’t exactly stellar. He’s only managed to score 374 runs in 25 matches, averaging 18.70 with just one half-century to his credit. However, his current form in IPL 2024, where his team sits comfortably at the top of the table, played a significant role in his selection.

India’s T20 World Cup Squad:

Rohit Sharma (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson (wk), Rishabh Pant (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Mohammed Siraj.
