Fans worldwide were not exactly thrilled with Steve Smith’s decision to shuffle in the batting order after David Warner’s retirement.

Australia’s star Test batsman, Steve Smith, is currently facing a challenging phase in his cricket career. Since taking over the opening position from David Warner, Smith has struggled to regain his top form. In the second Test against New Zealand, his struggle continued as he registered low scores once again.

In the first Test, which Australia won by 172 runs, Smith managed scores of 31 and 0 at the Sky Stadium in Wellington. This dip in form dates back to the all-format home series against the West Indies in January-February, where Smith first experimented as an opening batter alongside Usman Khawaja.

The initial phase of Smith as an opener didn’t start well, with scores of 12 and 11* in the Adelaide Test, which Australia won convincingly. In the second Test at Brisbane, he continued to struggle, getting out for just 6 runs in the first innings before showcasing his best innings from the opening slot.

Despite his valiant effort of scoring 91* in the chase of 216 runs, Smith’s innings went in vain against the West Indies. His disappointment was evident, and he was reduced to tears after the heartbreaking 8-run loss at the Gabba.

The decision to shift Smith to the opening position was met with skepticism from fans globally. The ongoing Test series in New Zealand was seen as an opportunity for him to prove himself in this new role, but unfortunately, the script has remained unchanged. In four Test innings, Steve Smith has averaged below 60, marking the first time since 2019 that his average has dipped below this level.

During Australia’s pursuit of 279 for victory, Smith managed only 9 runs, while Khawaja and Labuschagne also fell for low scores. Stumps were called on day 3, leaving Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh to continue the chase tomorrow. The struggles of a once-dominant batsman are garnering attention, and fans eagerly await a turnaround in Steve Smith’s fortunes.

There was a time when the best bowlers in the world dreamed of getting Steve Smith out LBW, and now is the time when every bowler can easily get him out LBW. How fast the night changes. 😢pic.twitter.com/vV8T97blRN

Steve Smith failed yet again as Opener. He has scored 171 runs in 8 innings that also has one 90, if you remove that then basically he has done nothing.

He has to immediately move down to middle order, Otherwise his avg will drop below 50 in Test#NZvAUSpic.twitter.com/SpwOGMtzTe

Sri Lanka secured a 32-run win against India in the second ODI at R. Premadasa Stadium, gaining a 1-0 advantage in the three-match series. In a disappointing turn of events, the Indian cricket team, captained by Rohit Sharma, faced their first loss of the Sri Lanka series on Sunday. The hosts secured a comfortable 32-run victory at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. After the match, Rohit Sharma didn't hold back in his critique, acknowledging that his team failed to play up to standard during the encounter. Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first, setting India a target of 241 runs. The Men in Blue got off to a promising start, but their chase unraveled significantly, largely due to an outstanding bowling display by Sri Lankan leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay. Vandersay's career-best figures of 6/33 played a pivotal role in dismantling India's batting lineup. Rohit Sharma's brisk 64 off 44 balls initially put India in a strong position. However, his dismissal, attempting a reverse sweep that was brilliantly caught by Pathum Nissanka off Vandersay's bowling, signaled the beginning of India's downfall. When asked about his shot selection during the post-match presentation, the 37-year-old defended his aggressive approach. Speaking to the presenters after the match, Rohit said, “We didn't play good cricket, that's why we lost the game. We do understand the nature of this surface and the nature of how the game is going to go as well. It gets really, really tough in the middle overs. So you have to try and capitalize in the powerplay and get as many runs as possible. That's what both openers were trying to do. But we were just not good enough today.” “The reason I got 65 runs is because of the way I batted. When I bat like that, there is bound to be risk taking, and I'm not afraid to do that. Whenever you get out, whether you score 100, 50 or zero, you feel disappointed if you don't get across the line. But that won't change my intent,” the Indian skipper further added. In challenging spin-friendly conditions in Colombo on Sunday, India faced a target of 241 runs. Despite valiant efforts from captain Rohit Sharma and middle-order batsman Axar, the rest of the Indian lineup struggled. As a result, the team fell short, losing the match by 32 runs.
