Lahiru Thirimanne, a seasoned player for Sri Lanka, has made the emotional preference to step away from all forms of International Cricket. Sri Lanka Cricket’s Executive Committee has warmly welcomed and accepted his choice, following the filing of Thirimanne’s resignation letter declaring his intention to retire from serving his nation on the international cricket scene.

Thirimanne’s cricket career comprises an incredible 44 Test matches, during which he accumulated 2088 runs, including three remarkable hundreds, all at an average of 26.43. Additionally, his prowess extended to 127 ODIs and 26 T20Is, when he clocked up 3194 and 291 runs, respectively. Notably, the left-handed batsman attained the milestone of four hundred in the ODI format and also took on the duty of captaining Sri Lanka in five ODIs.

In a recent meeting, the Executive Committee unanimously voted to honor and accept Thirimanne’s choice to retire. Sri Lanka Cricket officially relayed this news in a statement made on Friday, recognizing his contributions and wishing him well for his future pursuits.

‘‘We take this opportunity to wish Thirimanne the best in his future endeavours, and his services to Sri Lanka Cricket covering all forms of the game will be well remembered,’’ said Ashley De Silva, CEO, of Sri Lanka Cricket.

Lahiru Thirimanne, aged 33, expressed his decision on July 23 through his social media channel, marking the conclusion of a remarkable career. His journey saw him representing Sri Lanka in a total of 44 Test matches, 127 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 26 T20 Internationals (T20Is) since he debuted on the international scene in the year 2010.

“It has been an absolute honour to represent my country for the past few years. This game has given me so much over the years. But with a lot of mixed feelings, I am here to announce my retirement from international cricket with immediate effect,” Thirimanne posted on Facebook.

Lahiru Thirimanne was a part of Sri Lanka’s 2014 T20I World Cup squad

Thirimanne’s impact was felt in many T20 World Cup voyages, with his essential contribution to Sri Lanka’s recent 50-over World Cup efforts, notably in 2015 and 2019. His contribution contributed to the team’s performance on the world stage. He was part of Sri Lanka’s side that defeated India in the final of the 2014 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Mirpur.

Laying a deeper look at his cricketing career, Thirimanne’s final match representing Sri Lanka was in the second Test against India in Bengaluru in March of the preceding year. Regrettably, his efforts in that contest were limited, as he scored barely eight and zero in his two innings.

Sri Lanka secured a 32-run win against India in the second ODI at R. Premadasa Stadium, gaining a 1-0 advantage in the three-match series. In a disappointing turn of events, the Indian cricket team, captained by Rohit Sharma, faced their first loss of the Sri Lanka series on Sunday. The hosts secured a comfortable 32-run victory at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. After the match, Rohit Sharma didn't hold back in his critique, acknowledging that his team failed to play up to standard during the encounter. Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first, setting India a target of 241 runs. The Men in Blue got off to a promising start, but their chase unraveled significantly, largely due to an outstanding bowling display by Sri Lankan leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay. Vandersay's career-best figures of 6/33 played a pivotal role in dismantling India's batting lineup. Rohit Sharma's brisk 64 off 44 balls initially put India in a strong position. However, his dismissal, attempting a reverse sweep that was brilliantly caught by Pathum Nissanka off Vandersay's bowling, signaled the beginning of India's downfall. When asked about his shot selection during the post-match presentation, the 37-year-old defended his aggressive approach. Speaking to the presenters after the match, Rohit said, “We didn't play good cricket, that's why we lost the game. We do understand the nature of this surface and the nature of how the game is going to go as well. It gets really, really tough in the middle overs. So you have to try and capitalize in the powerplay and get as many runs as possible. That's what both openers were trying to do. But we were just not good enough today.” “The reason I got 65 runs is because of the way I batted. When I bat like that, there is bound to be risk taking, and I'm not afraid to do that. Whenever you get out, whether you score 100, 50 or zero, you feel disappointed if you don't get across the line. But that won't change my intent,” the Indian skipper further added. In challenging spin-friendly conditions in Colombo on Sunday, India faced a target of 241 runs. Despite valiant efforts from captain Rohit Sharma and middle-order batsman Axar, the rest of the Indian lineup struggled. As a result, the team fell short, losing the match by 32 runs.
