Nicholas Pooran has been named the vice-captain of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2024. KL Rahul, who previously held the position, will continue to lead the franchise. Pooran takes over the vice-captaincy from Krunal Pandya, who led the team last year in Rahul’s absence due to a quadricep strain.

During IPL 2023, Krunal Pandya contributed significantly, scoring 188 runs and taking nine wickets in 15 games. However, Pooran’s standout performance, amassing 358 runs with two half-centuries at an impressive strike rate of nearly 173, led to his appointment as the vice-captain.

Notably, LSG secured Pooran for a hefty sum of INR 16 crore in the 2023 auction, marking the highest-ever purchase for a wicketkeeper in IPL history. His aggressive batting style is expected to provide a crucial boost to Lucknow’s batting lineup in the upcoming season.

Nicholas Pooran, renowned as one of the most formidable T20 batsmen globally, has been showcasing his skills in the IPL since 2019. Over 62 matches in the competition, he has amassed 1270 runs, marked by six impressive half-centuries. Before joining Lucknow Super Giants, Pooran demonstrated his power from Punjab Kings.

Presently, LSG’s skipper KL Rahul is on the sidelines due to a quadricep strain sustained during the first Test against England last month. Seeking specialized advice, Rahul has traveled to London, but optimistic reports indicate a probable recovery in time for IPL 2024.

The upcoming IPL season is set to kick off on March 22 with an enticing clash between champions Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore. LSG will embark on their campaign against the Rajasthan Royals on March 24 in Jaipur.
