In a remarkable achievement, Kane Williamson clinched the title of the fastest player to reach 32 Test centuries, surpassing Steve Smith’s record by achieving the milestone in just 172 innings. The captain led New Zealand to a 2-0 series victory against South Africa, delivering a stellar performance in the second Test with a score of 133 off 260 balls.

Currently holding the top spot in the ICC Test rankings, Williamson boasts an impressive record of 32 centuries and 33 half-centuries in Test cricket. Making his Test debut in 2010 against India, he has played 98 Test matches, accumulating 8666 runs at an average of 55.91. His home record surpasses his away performances, but this doesn’t undermine his prowess in foreign conditions. Known for his adeptness against spin, Williamson has 13 centuries and 15 half-centuries in away matches, while tallying 18 centuries and 18 half-centuries at home.

The recent century in the series against South Africa marked Williamson’s third in the last four innings, showcasing his exceptional form. In the first Test, he set the stage with scores of 118 and 109, joining the ranks of only five New Zealand batsmen to achieve twin centuries in a Test match.

Facing a formidable South African bowling attack, Williamson displayed remarkable resilience, especially evident in his gritty 43 in the first innings, laying the groundwork for his heroic century in the final innings. Beyond securing his position as one of the finest contemporary batsmen, this century elevated Williamson to the elite list of players with 32 Test hundreds. His achievement as the fastest to reach this milestone, in just 172 innings, eclipses the previous record held by Steve Smith at 174 innings.

List of fastest players to reach 32 Test centuries

  1. Kane Williamson – 172 innings
  2. Steve Smith – 174 innings
  3. Ricky Ponting – 176 innings
  4. Sachin Tendulkar – 179 innings
  5. Younis Khan – 183 innings

New Zealand is set to welcome their trans-Tasman rivals, Australia, for a series comprising three T20Is and two Test matches. The T20Is are scheduled to kick off on February 21, Wednesday, at Wellington’s Sky Stadium. Kane Williamson is expected to captain the New Zealand side during the T20I series, while Tim Southee will take on the role of skipper for the Test series.

Sri Lanka secured a 32-run win against India in the second ODI at R. Premadasa Stadium, gaining a 1-0 advantage in the three-match series. In a disappointing turn of events, the Indian cricket team, captained by Rohit Sharma, faced their first loss of the Sri Lanka series on Sunday. The hosts secured a comfortable 32-run victory at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. After the match, Rohit Sharma didn't hold back in his critique, acknowledging that his team failed to play up to standard during the encounter. Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first, setting India a target of 241 runs. The Men in Blue got off to a promising start, but their chase unraveled significantly, largely due to an outstanding bowling display by Sri Lankan leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay. Vandersay's career-best figures of 6/33 played a pivotal role in dismantling India's batting lineup. Rohit Sharma's brisk 64 off 44 balls initially put India in a strong position. However, his dismissal, attempting a reverse sweep that was brilliantly caught by Pathum Nissanka off Vandersay's bowling, signaled the beginning of India's downfall. When asked about his shot selection during the post-match presentation, the 37-year-old defended his aggressive approach. Speaking to the presenters after the match, Rohit said, “We didn't play good cricket, that's why we lost the game. We do understand the nature of this surface and the nature of how the game is going to go as well. It gets really, really tough in the middle overs. So you have to try and capitalize in the powerplay and get as many runs as possible. That's what both openers were trying to do. But we were just not good enough today.” “The reason I got 65 runs is because of the way I batted. When I bat like that, there is bound to be risk taking, and I'm not afraid to do that. Whenever you get out, whether you score 100, 50 or zero, you feel disappointed if you don't get across the line. But that won't change my intent,” the Indian skipper further added. In challenging spin-friendly conditions in Colombo on Sunday, India faced a target of 241 runs. Despite valiant efforts from captain Rohit Sharma and middle-order batsman Axar, the rest of the Indian lineup struggled. As a result, the team fell short, losing the match by 32 runs.
