Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has shared a significant update regarding the fitness of the renowned fast bowler Mohammed Shami.

Mohammed Shami has been sidelined since the conclusion of the ICC World Cup 2023 due to discomfort in his ankle. The fast bowler, despite experiencing pain during the tournament, opted for injections to manage the pain and give his best for the team. Despite not being fully fit, he emerged as the leading wicket-taker with 24 wickets in the tournament.

After the World Cup, Shami took a break and didn’t participate in the T20I series against Australia, the white-ball series against South Africa, and the T20I series against Afghanistan. It was later revealed that his injury was more severe than initially thought, necessitating surgery.

Shami recently underwent a successful ankle operation and shared the update on social media, assuring his fans that he will be back soon. Addressing the speculation surrounding his comeback, BCCI secretary Jay Shah provided a fitness update, confirming Shami’s return to India after the surgery and expressing optimism about his participation in the series against Bangladesh.

Jay Shah provided an update on KL Rahul as well, who experienced discomfort in his quadriceps in the first Test against England, leading to his absence throughout the series. Shah mentioned that the wicketkeeper-batsman received an injection and has commenced his rehabilitation process at the NCA..

“Shami’s surgery is done, he is back in India. Shami’s return is likely for the home series against Bangladesh. KL Rahul needed an injection, he has started rehab and is at the NCA,” Jay Shah said.

Jay Shah’s announcement about Mohammed Shami’s return to the Test series against Bangladesh implies that the pace bowler won’t be available for the T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled for June. Unfortunately, this also means that Mohammed Shami who represents Gujarat Titans will be absent from the IPL 2024. His non-participation will undoubtedly create a significant gap for both GT and the Indian team.
