ICC Announces Women’s T20I Team Of The Year 2023, Shocking To See No Indian Batter In The List

The ICC set off the 2023 awards announcement week by unveiling the T20I Team of the Year in both men’s and women’s categories. In the ICC Women’s T20I Team of the Year, they’ve recognized 11 outstanding players who left a mark with their bat, ball, or all-round performances in 2023.

The team boasts a constellation of stars, acknowledging players who excelled in both batting and bowling, significantly contributing to their teams’ success in T20Is. Australia dominates the ICC Women’s T20I Team of the Year – 2023, with the highest number of players, while England has two representatives. Sri Lanka, India, South Africa, New Zealand, and the West Indies each have one player in this esteemed lineup. The captaincy honor goes to Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu.

Chamari Athapaththu had a remarkable 2023 in T20Is, starting with a Player of the Match performance in Cape Town during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. She smashed 68 off 50 balls, leading her team to a stunning 3-run victory over hosts South Africa. Ending the year with a record 470 runs at a strike rate of over 130, she also played a crucial role in her team’s historic T20I series win against England in England.

South African batter Laura Wolvaardt, the second-highest run-scorer at the 2023 T20 World Cup with 586 runs at an average of 45, claims the number 3 spot.

West Indies batting all-rounder Hayley Matthews, with 700 runs at a strike rate of 132 and 19 wickets at an economy of 6.84 in 2023, secures the number 4 position. England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt, with 364 runs at a strike rate of 136 and an average of 15.50 in T20Is in 2023, is the second English player alongside spinner Sophie Ecclestone.

Australia’s Ellyse Perry, Ash Gardner, and Megan Schutt also secure spots in the best-playing eleven, recognized by the ICC for their stellar performances in the T20 World Cup and other T20I series.

In contrast to the four players in the 2022 Team of the Year, only India’s Deepti Sharma made it into the 2023 team. The batting all-rounder scored 106 runs and claimed 21 wickets in T20Is last year, showcasing her prowess on the field.

Sri Lanka secured a 32-run win against India in the second ODI at R. Premadasa Stadium, gaining a 1-0 advantage in the three-match series. In a disappointing turn of events, the Indian cricket team, captained by Rohit Sharma, faced their first loss of the Sri Lanka series on Sunday. The hosts secured a comfortable 32-run victory at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. After the match, Rohit Sharma didn't hold back in his critique, acknowledging that his team failed to play up to standard during the encounter. Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first, setting India a target of 241 runs. The Men in Blue got off to a promising start, but their chase unraveled significantly, largely due to an outstanding bowling display by Sri Lankan leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay. Vandersay's career-best figures of 6/33 played a pivotal role in dismantling India's batting lineup. Rohit Sharma's brisk 64 off 44 balls initially put India in a strong position. However, his dismissal, attempting a reverse sweep that was brilliantly caught by Pathum Nissanka off Vandersay's bowling, signaled the beginning of India's downfall. When asked about his shot selection during the post-match presentation, the 37-year-old defended his aggressive approach. Speaking to the presenters after the match, Rohit said, “We didn't play good cricket, that's why we lost the game. We do understand the nature of this surface and the nature of how the game is going to go as well. It gets really, really tough in the middle overs. So you have to try and capitalize in the powerplay and get as many runs as possible. That's what both openers were trying to do. But we were just not good enough today.” “The reason I got 65 runs is because of the way I batted. When I bat like that, there is bound to be risk taking, and I'm not afraid to do that. Whenever you get out, whether you score 100, 50 or zero, you feel disappointed if you don't get across the line. But that won't change my intent,” the Indian skipper further added. In challenging spin-friendly conditions in Colombo on Sunday, India faced a target of 241 runs. Despite valiant efforts from captain Rohit Sharma and middle-order batsman Axar, the rest of the Indian lineup struggled. As a result, the team fell short, losing the match by 32 runs.
