In his extensive international career, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has singled out Sri Lankan icon Muttiah Muralitharan as the most challenging bowler he encountered at the crease.

Gautam Gambhir Names The Toughest Bowler He Ever Faced In His Career

Making his debut for India in 2003, he went on to represent the nation in 58 Test matches, 147 ODIs, and 37 T20Is. Throughout his impressive career, he notched up 4154 runs in Tests with a solid average of 41.95, including nine centuries and 22 fifties. In ODIs, he showcased his skills by scoring 5238 runs at an average of 39.68 and an impressive strike rate of 85.25. Additionally, in T20Is, he contributed 932 runs with a notable strike rate of 119.02.

Gautam Gambhir played pivotal roles in two World Cup victories for India. He emerged as the top run-scorer for India in the finals of both the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 World Cup. Recognizing his outstanding performance, he was honored as the ICC Test Player of the Year in 2009. Throughout his illustrious career, he faced formidable bowlers including Shane Warne, Muttiah Muralitharan, Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee, Shoaib Akhtar, Dale Steyn, James Anderson, and many other legendary names.

Gautam Gambhir demonstrated his prowess even against exceptional bowlers like Muttiah Muralitharan.

One fan asked him to name the toughest bowler he faced in international cricket. Gambhir replied: “One & only Muttiah Muralitharan”

Gautam Gambhir’s gesture of respect to Muttiah Muralitharan derives from their cricket confrontations, where Gambhir not only kept his own but also exhibited a combination of aggressiveness and prudence against the legendary Sri Lankan spinner. Gambhir’s skill is clear in the statistics, showcasing his ability to not just survive but even demolish Muralitharan.

In ODIs, Gambhir enjoyed an amazing average of 42 against Muralitharan, getting removed just once in 147 deliveries and scoring 128 runs. The Test venue witnessed Gambhir accumulating 137 runs against Muralitharan, facing 271 balls and maintaining a steady average of 34, with only four dismissals against the spin specialist.

Even in the T20 format, especially the IPL, Muralitharan failed to get the better of Gambhir in the 41 balls sent to him, giving 51 runs without a wicket. Clearly, Gambhir maintained the upper hand against the Sri Lankan veteran, demonstrating his talent and control against Muralitharan’s bowling.

Sri Lanka secured a 32-run win against India in the second ODI at R. Premadasa Stadium, gaining a 1-0 advantage in the three-match series. In a disappointing turn of events, the Indian cricket team, captained by Rohit Sharma, faced their first loss of the Sri Lanka series on Sunday. The hosts secured a comfortable 32-run victory at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. After the match, Rohit Sharma didn't hold back in his critique, acknowledging that his team failed to play up to standard during the encounter. Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first, setting India a target of 241 runs. The Men in Blue got off to a promising start, but their chase unraveled significantly, largely due to an outstanding bowling display by Sri Lankan leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay. Vandersay's career-best figures of 6/33 played a pivotal role in dismantling India's batting lineup. Rohit Sharma's brisk 64 off 44 balls initially put India in a strong position. However, his dismissal, attempting a reverse sweep that was brilliantly caught by Pathum Nissanka off Vandersay's bowling, signaled the beginning of India's downfall. When asked about his shot selection during the post-match presentation, the 37-year-old defended his aggressive approach. Speaking to the presenters after the match, Rohit said, “We didn't play good cricket, that's why we lost the game. We do understand the nature of this surface and the nature of how the game is going to go as well. It gets really, really tough in the middle overs. So you have to try and capitalize in the powerplay and get as many runs as possible. That's what both openers were trying to do. But we were just not good enough today.” “The reason I got 65 runs is because of the way I batted. When I bat like that, there is bound to be risk taking, and I'm not afraid to do that. Whenever you get out, whether you score 100, 50 or zero, you feel disappointed if you don't get across the line. But that won't change my intent,” the Indian skipper further added. In challenging spin-friendly conditions in Colombo on Sunday, India faced a target of 241 runs. Despite valiant efforts from captain Rohit Sharma and middle-order batsman Axar, the rest of the Indian lineup struggled. As a result, the team fell short, losing the match by 32 runs.
