Following the South Africa tour in 2022, Team India pacer, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, has not secured a spot either in the Indian ODI squad or in the recently announced World Cup lineup.

The chief selector of the Indian cricket team, Ajit Agarkar, unveiled the 15-player lineup for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, with Rohit Sharma leading the squad. Notably, Team India opted to stick with the same roster that had represented them in the Asia Cup 2023. Unfortunately, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who hadn’t made the cut since the South Africa tour in 2022, didn’t find a place either in the Indian ODI team or in the World Cup squad. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, leading the Noida Super Kings in the UPT20, recently made a significant statement about his future.

Having been part of India’s last two World Cup editions, Bhuvneshwar Kumar remains optimistic about staging a comeback and hasn’t ruled himself out. During an interview, Bhuvneshwar Kumar emphasized that his focus isn’t solely on returning to the team, but on playing quality cricket and relishing the experience.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar said, “When you are at a stage when you know you are going to play only for a few more years, being a fast bowler, it hits you, and you want to enjoy cricket. I am at that stage now.”

Bhuvneshwar Kumar hasn’t played for Team India since November 2022. Bhuvneshwar Kumar said, “Yes, I am not part of the Indian team, but this does not bother me. It’s not that I am trying something different or planning anything new to come back; I am just focusing on playing cricket.”

Bhuvneshwar Kumar represented the Indian cricket team in both the 2015 World Cup held in Australia and the 2019 World Cup in England. During these global tournaments, he showcased his skills in seven matches, contributing significantly with 11 wickets to his name.

Talking about his comeback in the Indian team, Bhuveshwar made a big statement and said, “I am not playing just to make a comeback. I am doing what is needed to play good cricket. There might be a chance to make a comeback. But that is not my focus. Whatever format or league I play in, I want to contribute. If things fall into place, I can make a comeback, but that is not my sole focus now.”

Sri Lanka secured a 32-run win against India in the second ODI at R. Premadasa Stadium, gaining a 1-0 advantage in the three-match series. In a disappointing turn of events, the Indian cricket team, captained by Rohit Sharma, faced their first loss of the Sri Lanka series on Sunday. The hosts secured a comfortable 32-run victory at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. After the match, Rohit Sharma didn't hold back in his critique, acknowledging that his team failed to play up to standard during the encounter. Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first, setting India a target of 241 runs. The Men in Blue got off to a promising start, but their chase unraveled significantly, largely due to an outstanding bowling display by Sri Lankan leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay. Vandersay's career-best figures of 6/33 played a pivotal role in dismantling India's batting lineup. Rohit Sharma's brisk 64 off 44 balls initially put India in a strong position. However, his dismissal, attempting a reverse sweep that was brilliantly caught by Pathum Nissanka off Vandersay's bowling, signaled the beginning of India's downfall. When asked about his shot selection during the post-match presentation, the 37-year-old defended his aggressive approach. Speaking to the presenters after the match, Rohit said, “We didn't play good cricket, that's why we lost the game. We do understand the nature of this surface and the nature of how the game is going to go as well. It gets really, really tough in the middle overs. So you have to try and capitalize in the powerplay and get as many runs as possible. That's what both openers were trying to do. But we were just not good enough today.” “The reason I got 65 runs is because of the way I batted. When I bat like that, there is bound to be risk taking, and I'm not afraid to do that. Whenever you get out, whether you score 100, 50 or zero, you feel disappointed if you don't get across the line. But that won't change my intent,” the Indian skipper further added. In challenging spin-friendly conditions in Colombo on Sunday, India faced a target of 241 runs. Despite valiant efforts from captain Rohit Sharma and middle-order batsman Axar, the rest of the Indian lineup struggled. As a result, the team fell short, losing the match by 32 runs.
