Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has offered some advice to Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya, suggesting that he could draw inspiration from the resilience of Rohit Sharma. Sehwag made these comments in light of Mumbai Indians’ recent struggles, having suffered their third consecutive defeat in the ongoing IPL 2024 season.

Anticipation was high as Mumbai Indians prepared to play their first home game at the Wankhede Stadium. With home teams enjoying a significant advantage in this edition of the IPL, fans expected Mumbai to turn their fortunes around. However, despite winning the toss, Mumbai Indians failed to capitalize on any other aspect of the game against the Rajasthan Royals.

From the outset of Mumbai’s innings, the Rajasthan Royals bowlers, led by Trent Boult, exploited the favorable conditions and the low morale of Mumbai’s batsmen. Mumbai’s top-order collapsed, managing to score only 20 runs before losing four wickets by the fourth over.

Boult was particularly effective, removing key batsmen such as Rohit Sharma, Naman Dhir, and Dewald Brevis, all without scoring a run. Ishan Kishan also fell victim to Nandre Burger’s bowling, leaving Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma to steady the ship after the disastrous start.

Despite the efforts of Pandya and Varma, they struggled to build significant partnerships. Pandya managed to score 34 runs off 21 balls, while Varma contributed 32 off 29 balls. Tim David provided some support with 17 runs off 24 balls. However, Mumbai Indians were eventually bowled out for 125 runs, with Boult and Chahal taking three wickets each, Burger claiming two, and Avesh Khan picking up one.

In the chase, Rajasthan Royals comfortably reached the target within the 16th over, securing a six-wicket victory with Riyan Parag’s half-century leading the charge. With Mumbai Indians facing three consecutive losses out of three matches played, their chances of staging a comeback appear uncertain. While they can afford a couple more defeats, they aim to avoid further setbacks.

However, continued losses will increase the pressure on Mumbai Indians to win every remaining game. Although challenging, Mumbai has a history of successfully overcoming such situations in the past.

“Mumbai is a team that loses 3-4 matches but knows how to make a comeback. But that was Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai, not Hardik’s. So this is a pressure on Hardik as to how he can inspire his team to stage a comeback.” – Sehwag said via Cricbuzz.
