During the Boxing Day Test at Centurion against South Africa, India was penalized for their slow over rate.
India faced consequences for a slow over-rate during the Boxing Day Test against South Africa in Centurion, led by Rohit Sharma. Unfortunately, they suffered a defeat by an innings and 32 runs, causing them to slide to the sixth position in the World Test Championship rankings. Following the match, Match Referee Chris Broad imposed a penalty as India fell short by two overs. This resulted in a loss of two more World Test Championship points and a 10% fine on their match fees.
Presently, India holds 14 points with a percentile of 38.89, which might complicate their path to qualifying for the World Test Championship finale for the third time. The upcoming second Test against South Africa and the five-match series against England now carry significant importance for the team.
As the second Test against South Africa approaches, the visiting squad must urgently address their batting and bowling deficiencies. With two wickets in just 101.5 overs, the batting team had a rough time in the last encounter. While criticizing the pace unit, Rohit Sharma singled out Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, and Prasidh Krishna for not giving Jasprit Bumrah enough help. He stressed how unacceptable it was to let up more than 400 runs in Centurion.
Dean Elgar, meanwhile, was named Player of the Match for his amazing century, which was important in the Proteas’ big victory. With Temba Bavuma out for the opening day of the first Test, Elgar will lead the side in the second Test.
Having won their opening Test match against India, South Africa now has an ideal record and is at the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. On the points table, New Zealand is second, Australia is third, Bangladesh is fourth, and Pakistan is fifth.
