Asia Cup 2023 is all set to commence from August 30 and It will be mutually hosted by both Pakistan and Sri Lanka this time. Ahead of that, Nepal has announced their 17-member squad for the major tournament that will soon travel to Pakistan to start their preparation. Nepal will play their first game against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023.
Rohit Paudel will lead Nepal in their maiden Asia Cup campaign, making the challenge significant, especially with formidable opponents like Pakistan and India in the league stage.
It’s worth highlighting that Nepal’s recent performance in the Emerging Asia Cup didn’t match expectations. While they faced losses against Pakistan A and India A, they did manage a victory against the United Arab Emirates. Their display in the ODI World Cup qualifiers was also less than satisfactory, revealing ample room for improvement in the present situation for the team balance.
Key to Nepal’s prospects in the tournament will be the spin expertise of Sandeep Lamichhane and Lalit Rajbanshi. Lamichhane’s extensive exposure to franchise cricket worldwide bolsters his experience, which could be a valuable asset. With 49 matches for the national team and 111 wickets to his name, his skills will be critical, particularly in conditions like those in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, where the ball often takes a turn.
In the realm of batting, Nepal’s strength will lie in the dynamic partnership of Kushal Bhurtel and Aasif Sheikh. Captain Rohit’s role will be pivotal as well. Having participated in 52 ODIs for the national team, the 20-year-old has accumulated 1469 runs. Furthermore, the trio of all-rounders – Dipendra Singh Airee, Kushal Malla, and Pratis G – will hold significant importance for the team during this major tournament. Despite their relative lack of experience, the team boasts the much-needed firepower to make a mark.
