India and England are set to clash in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024 at Providence Stadium in Guyana on June 27.
Team India is gearing up to face defending champions England in the second semifinal of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled for Thursday, June 27, at Providence Stadium in Guyana. Interestingly, these two teams also met in the second semifinal of the last edition, where Jos Buttler’s squad thoroughly dominated, winning by 10 wickets. This time, India is eager for revenge, while England aims to replicate their previous success against Rohit Sharma’s side.
However, the forecast for tomorrow predicts persistent rain, which could disrupt the highly anticipated IND vs. ENG semifinal. If adverse weather conditions prevent the match from taking place, ICC regulations will determine the outcome.
What happens if the match is a wash-out?
If weather conditions are unfavorable for the second semifinal, an additional four hours and 10 minutes have been allocated to complete the match, as there is no reserve day. If the game is washed out, which is a possibility given the weather forecast, India will advance to the final. This is because India topped their group in the Super 8 stage, while England finished second in Group B behind South Africa. According to ICC regulations, the team with the higher finish in the Super 8 stage will progress if a knockout match is abandoned or ends in a tie.
No Reserve day, but the extra time allocation
For the knockout matches of the 2024 T20 World Cup, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has made arrangements for rain interruptions. Reserve days have been set aside for the first semifinal and the final, but not for the second semifinal due to scheduling constraints. For each knockout match, an extra 250 minutes have been provided to ensure an outcome. This includes 60 minutes on the match day and 190 minutes on the reserve day. In the case of the second semifinal, which lacks a reserve day, the entire 250 minutes can be used on the scheduled day. This could result in play continuing until around 3:30 AM IST, with the match starting at 8 PM IST.
India, an unbeaten side, will go straight to the final if rain cancels the second semifinal. They will face either Afghanistan or South Africa in the final at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados, on June 29. India secured their spot by topping their group in the Super 8 stage with wins against Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Australia.
Similarly, if Afghanistan’s first-ever semifinal against South Africa is washed out even on the reserved day then, South Africa will progress to the final.
