Rohit Sharma, the former captain of Mumbai Indians (MI), appeared deeply moved following another disappointing performance in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL).

Rohit Sharma couldn’t quite make an impact for his team against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 55th match of the league at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday, May 6.

This season of the Indian Premier League saw Rohit Sharma relieved of his captaincy duties for Mumbai Indians (MI). Hardik Pandya took over as skipper after being traded in from Gujarat Titans (GT).

While the leadership burden was lifted from Rohit’s shoulders, there was a weight of expectation for him to perform exceptionally well with the bat. Despite his remarkable success as MI’s captain, Rohit’s batting performances in the IPL needed to have been up to his usual standards.

Rohit started the season impressively, with two consecutive outstanding innings, and even notched up a century against Chennai Super Kings, albeit in a losing effort.

In the initial seven matches, Rohit Sharma showcased his prowess with the bat, amassing 297 runs at an impressive average of 49.5 and a strike rate of 164.1. However, his form took a downturn in the subsequent five matches, where he managed only 33 runs at an average of 6.6 and a strike rate of 94.3.

Facing Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rohit could only muster 4 runs off 5 balls before being dismissed by Pat Cummins. Cummins delivered a length ball on the middle stump, tempting Rohit to flick it behind square. Although Rohit connected well, the ball flew off the leading edge, straight into the hands of Heinrich Klaasen who took a simple catch, sending Rohit back to the pavilion.

Pat Cummins has now gotten Rohit Sharma out four times in T20 matches, making it quite a challenge for the Indian batsman. In the nine times they’ve faced off, Rohit has managed just 57 runs from 41 balls against Cummins, averaging only 14.25.

Unfortunately, Rohit hasn’t been in his best form lately, which could be concerning for India with the T20 World Cup coming up in about a month.

During the match against SRH where Mumbai Indians were chasing a target of 174, they found themselves struggling at 31/3. With Rohit Sharma, Naman Dhir, and Ishan Kishan all dismissed early, things looked tough. But Suryakumar Yadav, proving why he’s considered one of the best in the format, played a stellar innings, scoring an unbeaten 102 runs to guide Mumbai Indians to a comfortable seven-wicket victory.
