Rohit Sharma, the former Mumbai Indians skipper, managed to notch up his first century of the 2024 Indian Premier League season. Despite his impressive feat, his efforts fell short in guiding his team to triumph in their pursuit of 207 runs against the Chennai Super Kings.

Brett Lee had some kind words for Rohit Sharma after his stellar century in the recent IPL match against the Chennai Super Kings. Despite Mumbai Indians falling short against their rivals, Rohit Sharma’s remarkable innings earned him praise from the former Australian pacer.

During the clash at Wankhede Stadium, Rohit Sharma’s bat did most of the talking as he notched up his first century of the IPL 2024 season. Lee particularly noted Sharma’s decision to hold back on celebrations, recognizing the team’s loss despite his personal achievement.

In the face of Chennai Super Kings’ formidable target of 207 runs, Rohit Sharma led the Mumbai Indians’ batting lineup with grit and determination. His unbeaten knock of 105 runs off 63 balls, comprising 11 fours and five sixes, showcased his prowess at the crease, although it wasn’t enough to secure victory for his team.

Sharma’s century, achieved in 61 balls during the final over of the match, was indeed a remarkable feat. However, his focus remained on the team’s performance rather than personal glory. Lee, speaking on Jio Cinema, commended Sharma’s humility and team spirit, highlighting his choice to prioritize the collective goal over individual milestones.

Despite Mumbai Indians’ valiant effort, they fell short by 20 runs, ending the match with a total of 186 runs for the loss of six wickets. While Rohit Sharma’s century was a standout moment, it ultimately served as a testament to his selflessness and commitment to the team’s success.

Speaking on Jio Cinema, Brett Lee said: “Rohit Sharma scored a brilliant hundred. The fact that he went out there, scored at a good clip too. I liked it when he scored his hundred, he didn’t even raise his bat. For me, it shows that the win means more than his personal milestone. You know, he played with real intent right from ball one. He played shots all around the ground, but then the power and the finesse came into play. 105 not out of 63 balls with 11 fours and 5 sixes, just unfortunately, you can’t do everything on your own.”

Rohit Sharma was the lone warrior for Mumbai on the day, with none of the other batters managing to even reach the half-century mark. As a result, Mumbai’s chase fell apart in the last 7 overs of the match. Despite the efforts of Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Tim David, they couldn’t offer much support to Rohit, leaving him with a daunting task.

Credit goes to CSK bowlers for their smart use of slower balls during those crucial final 7 overs. They kept taking wickets and didn’t allow many boundaries, putting immense pressure on Mumbai. This loss meant Mumbai Indians missed out on the chance to climb up the table and remained stuck in the 8th position, with just 2 wins and 4 losses from 6 games.
