The Mumbai Indians might have to go without their main batsman, Suryakumar Yadav, for a few additional matches in this season’s Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024).

Earlier reports indicated that the star cricketer Suryakumar Yadav will be absent from the Mumbai Indians‘ lineup for their first two matches in IPL 2024. Despite ongoing efforts, he has yet to fully recover from his injury, and the National Cricket Academy (NCA) has not given the green light for him to rejoin the Mumbai squad. However, officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remain optimistic about his participation in a significant number of matches throughout the tournament. They are cautious not to rush his return, prioritizing his fitness for the upcoming T20 World Cup, scheduled to commence on June 1.

A closed source disclosed that Suryakumar Yadav’s recovery is progressing well, but it may still be necessary for him to miss several more matches. It’s worth noting that the cricketer sustained an ankle injury in December 2023, followed by sports hernia surgery in Europe. Subsequently, he resumed training at the NCA and continues to be monitored there.

“Surya is making very good progress and very soon he will be back playing for MI. However, he might have to sit out for a few more games, having missed the first two. For BCCI, the main concern is if he is on course for World T20 which he is. Obviously, he will play for MI but after a sports hernia surgery, he can’t be rushed,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

Suryakumar Yadav, currently holding the title of the top-ranked T20I batsman globally, hasn’t been able to join Mumbai’s lineup for their IPL 2024 games yet. This absence has left Mumbai in a tough spot, as they suffered losses in both of their initial matches. The defeats came against Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad, with the latter match turning into a high-scoring affair at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. In place of Suryakumar, Mumbai has been relying on the young talent of Naman Dhir, who has shown promise in the team’s performances so far.

While the exact return date for Suryakumar remains uncertain, there’s hope that he’ll be back in action for the second leg of matches. As Mumbai gears up for their third game against Rajasthan Royals, it marks their first home match of the season, adding to the anticipation and stakes of the encounter.
