Sarfaraz Khan, the 26-year-old cricketer from Mumbai, was handed his Test debut cap on Thursday morning in Rajkot, and it was a momentous occasion as Indian cricket legend Anil Kumble presented him with the coveted cap.

In the moments leading up to the commencement of the third Test between India and England at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot, a wave of emotions swept through the atmosphere. Just moments before the toss, the iconic Anil Kumble presented Sarfaraz Khan with his Test cap, a symbolic gesture that held immense significance.

As Kumble shared a brief speech, the Indian team surrounding them erupted in applause, showing their support for the young cricketer from Mumbai. On the sidelines, Sarfaraz’s father, Naushad, couldn’t contain his emotions. Witnessing his son achieve a dream that had been nurtured over years of hard work and countless remarkable performances left him visibly moved.

The heartfelt scene unfolded as Sarfaraz Khan, after receiving the cap, immediately made a beeline for his father. With tears streaming down his cheeks, Naushad accepted the cap from his son and pressed a kiss onto the emblem. It was a poignant moment encapsulating a dream fulfilled through dedication, perseverance, and the unwavering support of a proud father.

Sarfaraz gently wiped away the tears that glistened on his father’s cheek, embracing him tightly. Despite the emotional moment, he managed to keep his feelings in check, fully aware that this was just the beginning of a challenging journey.

The anticipation surrounding Sarfaraz Khan’s Test debut had been building up for quite some time. The talented right-hander had consistently piled on runs in red-ball cricket for the past three seasons, boasting an impressive average of 69.85 with 14 centuries and 11 fifties in 45 first-class matches. When KL Rahul was ruled out of the Rajkot Test and Shreyas Iyer was dropped, it seemed inevitable that Sarfaraz would finally get his chance.

However, despite his stellar record, he was never the first choice for the middle-order position. Surprisingly, he was omitted from India’s squad for the previous home series against Australia, and even when the initial squad for the first two Tests against England was announced, Sarfaraz remained overlooked. Virat Kohli withdrew, yet Sarfaraz didn’t get the call; instead, Rajat Patidar was chosen as the replacement.

This occasion marked not only Sarfaraz’s debut but also that of another newcomer, Dhruv Jurel. Jurel took over the wicketkeeping duties from KS Bharat, who had been dropped from the playing XI due to lackluster performances. Dinesh Karthik, the seasoned Indian keeper and a member of the commentary team alongside Kumble, presented Jurel with his Test cap.
