In a remarkable turn of events, Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi has brought an end to Shakib Al Hasan’s extensive reign as the number-one all-rounder in the ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings. Mohammad Nabi claimed the top spot following an impressive century in the first ODI against Sri Lanka in Pallekele.

At the age of 39 years, Nabi’s resilient knock of 136 not only secured his place at the pinnacle of the ICC ODI all-rounders’ table but also made him the oldest player to achieve this feat. The previous record was held by Sri Lanka’s Tillkaratne Dilshan, who achieved the number one position at 38 years and eight months in June 2015.

This historic shift in the rankings adds to Afghanistan’s cricketing achievements, with Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (T20I bowling) also having previously topped the ICC rankings.

Shakib Al Hasan’s reign as the number one ODI all-rounder lasted an impressive 1,739 days, marking the longest unbroken stretch at the top since May 7, 2019. His overall reign spans a record 4,276 days, equivalent to over 11 and half years, surpassing the likes of Kapil Dev.

Mohammed Nabi has played a crucial role for Afghanistan in the ongoing series, showcasing his all-round skills. Despite not making significant contributions with the ball in the second match, he maintained an economical performance. His recent sensational performances in ODIs have earned him well-deserved recognition.

Dilshan Madushanka, the star pacer, also moved up four places to reach the 33rd position in the updated rankings as of Wednesday, February 14.

Switching to the batting rankings in ODIs, Babar Azam from Pakistan retained the top position. Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka, following his unbeaten 97 in the second match against Afghanistan, climbed to the 15th spot. Additionally, Pathum Nissanka, who notched a double century, surged up by 10 spots to claim the 18th position.
