Following his less-than-ideal performance in the recently concluded two-match Test series against South Africa, reports suggest that Iyer has expressed his interest in playing for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. His scores of 31 and 6 in Centurion, followed by 0 and 4* in Cape Town, have prompted this decision. Joining Mumbai could be a strategic move for Iyer, providing him with valuable match practice ahead of the upcoming five-Test series against England, set to commence on January 25.

Having drawn the crucial series against South Africa, India aims to deliver a strong performance against England to maintain their position in the World Test Championship standings. Iyer is set to replace Sarfaraz Khan in the Mumbai squad, with Sarfaraz and Tushar Deshpande heading to Ahmedabad to represent India A against England Lions. This shift in the Mumbai lineup indicates a focused preparation for the challenges posed by the upcoming England series.

Shreyas Iyer is gearing up for his first Ranji Trophy appearance in half a decade, as the dynamic batsman finds a spot in Mumbai’s lineup for the upcoming match against Andhra at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy ground starting January 12.

Shreyas Iyer, who won’t be part of India’s T20I series against Afghanistan, will play a crucial role in bolstering Mumbai’s lineup. The enigmatic batter last participated in a Ranji game back in 2018-19 in Nagpur, during Mumbai’s defeat against Vidarbha. Over the past five years, a combination of international commitments and various injury breaks has kept him away from Mumbai’s whites.

Mumbai heads into their upcoming match against Andhra on a high note, fueled by a remarkable victory in their last encounter. Facing Bihar in their previous game, Mumbai displayed dominance throughout, securing a win by an impressive innings and 51 runs. The team is set to enter the Andhra clash with a surge of confidence, and the addition of Iyer is expected to significantly bolster Mumbai’s prospects in the tournament.
