In the unpredictable realm of Test cricket, batsmen and bowlers are on an even playing field, each with a fair shot at making a significant impact and securing victory for their team. This is precisely why it’s hailed as the most challenging format in the game.

3 Shortest Test Matches In Test Cricket History

In a historic twist, the recent Test clash between India and South Africa at Cape Town has etched its name in cricket history, claiming the title of the shortest-ever Test match in the sport’s 147-year legacy. Clocking in at just 107 overs, equivalent to 642 balls, this match witnessed a whirlwind of record-breaking moments, ultimately culminating in India’s triumph and a leveled series at 1-1 with a convincing seven-wicket win.

Beyond marking India’s inaugural victory at Newlands, this match now stands as the briefest Test encounter, surpassing their previous record of 842 balls against England in 2021.

The records tumbled as South Africa found themselves batting twice on the same day, leading to a total of 23 wickets tumbling on the opening day alone. The swift turn of events saw India successfully chasing down 79 runs on Day 2, providing a remarkable and memorable kickoff to the new year.

List of the top 3 shortest completed test matches in the history of cricket:

1. South Africa vs India

In the opening Test of 2024 between India and South Africa at Newlands, Cape Town, cricket history witnessed its briefest chapter, spanning just five sessions. South Africa, batting first, succumbed to a mere 55 runs in 23.2 overs, marking their lowest home total. India, initially in a promising position, suffered a late collapse, losing their last six wickets without adding a run, accumulating a total of 153 runs in 34.5 overs.

In response, South Africa rallied to 176 runs in 36.5 overs. Facing a target of 79 runs, India efficiently chased it down in 12 overs, securing a victory. The entire spectacle unfolded within 107 overs, etching a remarkably succinct entry in the annals of Test cricket.

2. Australia vs South Africa

The MCG witnessed a historic Test match between Australia and South Africa, setting a record that stood unbroken for 89 years until India and South Africa surpassed it. This match marked South Africa’s two lowest test scores. Australia managed 153 runs in 54.3 overs in their sole innings. In response, South Africa faced a double collapse, getting bowled out for 36 runs in 23.2 overs in the first innings and 45 runs in 31.3 overs in the second innings. The entire game concluded in 109.2 overs, resulting in Australia’s victory by an innings and 72 runs.

3. West Indies vs England

In the cricket archives, the third shortest game on record unfolded in Bridgetown back in January 1935 when the West Indies faced off against England. Clocking in at a mere 112 overs, this match carved its own niche as one of the quirkiest test matches ever played, its narrative significantly shaped by persistent rain.

The West Indies took the first stance at bat, managing to notch up 102 runs in 47 overs. In response, England opted for a declaration, ending their innings at 81/7 after just 29.3 overs due to the unruly behavior of the pitch. Undeterred, West Indies returned to the crease, ultimately declaring their score at 51/6 within 19 overs. The see-saw continued as England chased, making 75/6 in 16.3 overs during the fourth innings, ultimately clinching victory in this rain-drenched spectacle.

The United States of America (USA) clinched a momentous T20I series victory against Bangladesh, following a thrilling 6-run triumph in the second match on May 23, 2024, at the Grand Prairie Cricket Complex in Houston. Defending a target of 145, the USA got off to a flying start when Sourabh Netravalkar managed to dismiss Soumya Sarkar with a brilliant catch off his own bowling. Despite this setback, Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto played positively, applying pressure on the USA bowlers and adding 30 runs for the second wicket. Their partnership was broken by a superb delivery from Jessy Singh that sent Tanzid Hasan back to the pavilion. Shanto, now joined by Towhid Hridoy, kept the scoreboard ticking, steering Bangladesh towards their target. However, a moment of brilliance in the field by Corey Anderson resulted in Shanto's run-out after a valuable 48-run partnership with Hridoy for the third wicket. Corey Anderson continued his impact by dismissing Hridoy, who dragged an inside edge onto his stumps, putting Bangladesh in a spot of bother. Shadley Van Schalkwyk then dismissed Mahmudullah, increasing the pressure on Bangladesh. Needing 12 runs off the final over, Ali Khan proved to be the hero for the USA. He removed Rishad Hossain, and earlier in his spell, he had taken the crucial wicket of the veteran Shakib Al Hasan. Ali Khan finished with impressive figures of 3 for 25 in 3.3 overs. Netravalkar chipped in with 2 for 15, and Van Schalkwyk also took 2 wickets, while Anderson had 1 for 11 in his 2 overs. Earlier in the match, Bangladesh's captain Shanto won the toss and chose to field. The USA openers, Steven Taylor and Monank Patel, started strongly, reaching 42 for no loss in the first six overs. Taylor and Andries Gous were dismissed in quick succession, but not before Taylor and Patel had put on 44 runs for the first wicket. Aaron Jones then joined Monank Patel, and the duo kept the momentum going with a mix of singles and boundaries, maintaining the pressure on the Bangladesh bowlers. The thrilling finish sent fans on social media into a frenzy, with mixed emotions ranging from jubilation for the USA's famous 6-run victory to brutal trolling of the Bangladesh team.
